Area Manager Lesvos

Boat Refugee Foundation provides medical and psychological (emergency) help and stands up for the rights of people on the run. Where systems become inhumane and compassion is lost, we spring into action. Since 2015, we have been committed to various locations on the edges of Europe.

We are currently active in the Mavrovouni camp on Lesvos, where approximately 3,000 people are living in degrading conditions. Here, our teams, which are largely run on the strength of volunteers, provide emergency relief seven days a week.


In this new position, as Area Manager you are responsible for coordinating, managing, developing and representing our mission on Lesvos.

You are the contact person and face of the mission. You ensure that the Boat Refugee Foundation is well embedded within the humanitarian and socio-political field on Lesvos. You achieve this by maintaining and developing a diversity of external relationships and/or partnerships. You have a pioneering role to exert political or social influence on behalf of the organization. You will work closely with the Advocacy Manager and the Communication department in the Netherlands.

You maintain an overview of the operational activities within the programs and you check whether these are carried out in such a way that they contribute to achieving the goals of the medical and MHPSS mission. You do this by monitoring, checking, evaluating and improving the quality of the processes performed.

You assess the strategic plans and make recommendations about the direction and choices for Boat Refugee Foundation within the mission. You follow developments closely, you see and seize new opportunities for expanding the various program components and you make proposals in that direction. You show guts and entrepreneurship.

As an Area Manager you are responsible for the safety of personnel (including volunteers) and the working environment of the Boat Refugee Foundation. For example, you ensure that safety information is provided to all new incoming volunteers and employees and you monitor compliance with the safety procedures. In addition, you have contact with the camp management and other actors when it comes to safety and security. You assess and analyze the risks, monitor and report the security situation and develop security procedures relevant to the context.

Finally, you collect and analyze various data, among other things in order to be able to control the content and quality of the programs. You therefore prepare various reports and ensure that the coordinators deliver their reports on time.

In this position you report directly to the Program Manager in the Netherlands. As an Area Manager you lead the team on site, consisting of the Medical Coordinator, MHPSS Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, the Logistics/financial/administrative assistant and the Assistant Medical Coordinator. Together you commit yourself every day to the success of the mission on Lesvos and to help vulnerable people.


You have a relevant Bachelor degree of University education (Political Science, International Development or other relevant studies).

You have at least three years of work experience in a management position within an international humanitarian context, where you represented the organization to external actors.

You have experience in managing a team and you therefore have excellent leadership qualities.

You have experience with budget management and monitoring cost effectiveness.

You have experience in managing within a fragile security context.

You are good at networking and can use this to exert political or social influence on behalf of the foundation.

You have strong analytical and strategic skills.

You are good at organizing, planning and coordinating additional tasks and you think in a solution-oriented way.

You are innovative, flexible and enterprising.

You are social and communicative strong. You like to be around people and you can deal with different cultures and working styles.


You are a EU citizen.

You speak and write fluently in English. Speaking Greek, Farsi, Arabic, Urdu and/or French is an advantage.

You are proficient with all Microsoft Office and Google programs.

You are flexible and you know how to tackle things. You have a 24/7 mentality and are willing to help where necessary.

You can work independently and you know how to consult at the right time, for example, with the coordinators.

You are in possession of a driving license.


As Area Manager Lesbos you will receive a salary that matches the character and objectives of our organization. In addition, your travel costs and accommodation are largely reimbursed. With a view to your vitality, we think it is important that you have space for relaxation and rest. You are also entitled to 200 holiday hours on an annual basis.

Initially you will receive a temporary contract for one year. An extension after this period is possible, with a maximum commitment of two years in total.
